I finally got around to watching Fury Road.
It’s as good as everyone said.
The Crow (1994) (3rd June) - a lot has been said and written about the film, so I won’t rehash that, but it was great to see it on the big screen as it looked and sounded great in a decently sized theatre with a solid sound system. What it got me thinking about was the upcoming film - the original is melodramatic, even deliberately Gothic and, along with the soundtrack, felt like a perfect distillation of the times. This leaves the door open for a new adaptation of the comics that tries to distill modern times and bring in advances in filmmaking as well as a bigger budget. I was also struck that, despite Brandon Lee’s background and training, they didn’t draw more on Hong Kong cinema but, perhaps thanks to The Matrix, there’s a greater appreciation of what that can bring to films, so you could definitely punch up the action scenes (no apologies). So it has left me more hopeful about the potential of the new film as you can make something unique that stands (or falls) on it’s own merits. Whether it will work remains to be seen.
My gf wanted to watch all of Mad Max after we’ve seen Fallout. I was entirely unaware of 1979 movie and thought Road Warrior was the first one. My impressions are that it sucked.
Ha, yea the (actual) first film is different and basically an Australian 70s indie film. The mad max most know doesn’t start until the second one.
Just watched Minari. It was really good.
I’ve been working my way through ‘The Orville’, and I really like it so far!
I’m open to recommendations for other Star Trek content

Just finished Godzilla x Kong last night after 3 attempts at watching it. I fell asleep the first 2 times because I’ve been very busy and was too exhausted come evening. It was fun watching all the monster fights as usual, but everything else was just a mess of storytelling and felt like random lore thrown in to tie thing together.
I’m watching Civil War this week when I have the time.
As for TV, I finally watched the last episode of Sugar after 3 weeks of not being able to catch the finale. It was ok, but not good or bad or anything. I thought it was gonna be a one-off thing but it looks like they intend to have another season at least. Also started the first 2 episodes of Dark Matter but haven’t had the time to continue yet.

Yes, I was left with the feeling that this was very much a kid’s movie (despite the only audience when I went was me and another middle age bloke watching it on his own) when earlier outings didn’t feel that way. I can feel my interest in the franchise waning considerably, at a time when the Japanese version just keeps getting better.
Not a lot so far.

Red Tails. Took a chance on this Blu-ray from a charity shop. I’m glad the charity got 50p. Not happy about the film. Letterboxd review.
Finally, rewatched Sky High, a Disney superhero film from 2005. Well worth your time. Full review on my blog.
Babylon 5. A 90s Sci-Fi TV show that competed with Star Trek’s Deep Space Nine.
I always meant to watch it, but never got around to it. It’s well known for pushing the then boundaries on how much serial story telling a TV show could do. And it’s doing a lot (so far).
I’ve just finished Season 1, which is well known to be rough, and so far I’m happy to keep watching.
Mars Express - Really enjoyed this one. Like Scavengars Reign and Blade Runner had a baby.
Manjummel Boys - Almost lost me with some corny intro stuff, but it picked up quickly after that and turned out really enjoyable.
Boy Kills World - I read “action movie fever dream” in the description and went for it. Story is a bit flat (it was based on a short film, so whatever) but the fights were pretty awesome, with equally awesome cringe-worthy gore (if you’re into that)
Civil War - I really appreciated the level of ambiguity in the movie, as it forced me to focus on the experience of the people in the story. Ultimately it doesnt really matter who the bad guys are, war is hell.
