If this ever gets to the point where I can use this by paying cash for access (and not having to deal with cryptocurrency) I would totally give it a try.

This crypto company looks pretty sketchy, and distrusting it is probably the correct response, but I didn’t feel like it could totally dismissed, either.

The inclusion of Chelsea Manning as both an employee and a testimonial giver piqued my interest. I found this article about this product, which definitely seems to throw some shade on the technology while explaining it more comprehensively:

“This is not a Web-3, scammy application or something like that,” the whistleblower said. “I really do view Nym as being a part of what, in three to five years from now, will be a renaissance in the post-cryptocurrency blockchain space.”

For the privacy project to succeed, Nym tokens will have to keep their value to attract computer engineers from across the world to help run its computer network.

Spoiler: in order to keep value, Nym’s cryptocurrency value must go up. You can’t be both post-cryptocurrency and in the middle of it at the same time.

(BTW, this is how the Session owners make money too… That and using the source code from Signal and Monero to make their own apps.)

I wouldn’t be surprised if privacy technology evolved past traditional VPNs, but I don’t think this is how.

I would have preferred if they left the cryptocurrency out of their business plan but irc they included it to incentive mix node operators so that the network could grow with demand.

I don’t know if nym the company will survive but the mixnet they’ve devised could be used in future privacy applications.

There’s other post-traditional VPNs on the rise. Ones that aren’t a single hop between you and the destination any more. They include Invisiv, Safing (IIRC), Apple Private Relay (if you can excuse the fact that they de-private your location), and now this. So improvements are coming. Just slowly.
