Hello,

By randomly browsing a discussion on !fediverse@lemmy.world, I just realized I wanted to come back to the real use of downvotes (which was first a user-level moderation about spam, and actually shouldn’t exist anymore as we now have the report button).

So I’m back here on Reddthat, happy to use an instance without downvotes!

    It’s truly the way it should be. If someone is making a bad argument, prove it in the comments. If someone is a turbo-bigot, report them. Drive-by downvoting is lazy commentary.

    Also, it’s just better for everyone’s mental health.

      The appropriate use of downvotes seems to be a divisive topic. I guess different people can try to use them in different ways, and that instances disabling downvotes will find their niche somehow.

            please keep using the report button in such cases.

            the report system archives the contents at the time of the report, therefore avoiding data loss when the creator changes/deletes it.

              Hello, I reported them before they deleted it, so the report should have the content. And in any case, they sent me another insulting DM that I reported too, so hopefully that should be enough.

              I’m also thinking about sending a message to their instance admins, but let’s see how it goes.

                The report did indeed show up, so that is something we can work with.

                Since Lemmy 0.19.3 0.19.2, reports are also sent to the user’s instance admins in addition to the reporter’s instance admins (and community instance mods/admins where applicable).
                Keep in mind that you can’t report the same item multiple times and the same text will be sent to all involved instances and their admins/community mods.
