There have been some impressive (and scary) temperature records set in the past couple weeks. That said, there are parts of Canada that are currently on fire that likely have a daily temperature in the hundreds of degrees. Clearly that doesn’t count for any sort of temperature record. What I’m wondering is: where’s the dividing line? How far away from a big fire do you have to be to record a valid daily temperature?
Good question. I don’t have a good answer. I just wanted to pause for a moment and reflect on how concisely this question captures the moment we’re living in.
It’s like, people talk about the hottest temperature on earth being recorded in Death Valley, and I’m like “That can’t be true; volcanoes exist.”
A better question might be, do forest fires affect local temperatures? If so, how far?
I’m guessing it depends on what the organization that is reporting its agenda is.
Few km? Less?
More?
