150 Democrats voted against the bill

It’s interesting that in the example given of the illegal who drunkenly caused a crash and killed 2 people had already been deported four times. So why act like deporting him again is a real solution?

It is essentially saying: what we have been doing hasn’t worked, so let’s do it harder! Democrats obviously don’t think drunk driving is a crime since they won’t vote for a measure that doesn’t actually solve anything!

And why drunk driving specifically? I mean don’t get me wrong we all know drunk driving is bad no matter who does it, but wouldn’t it make more sense if an undocumented person commits any crime under US law there should be some consequence? It shouldn’t matter if any undocumented person, applying for asylum or not, steals mail or violates the securities act of 1933. They should be kicked out.

Let’s be real about this: deportation is obviously not the whole answer. Still, republicans refuse to cooperate on comprehensive border and immigration reform simply because they don’t want the current president to get credit for anything during an election year - all the while crying about a crisis at the border.

Further, 33 out of 35 of Trump’s immigration agency actions either got ruled against in court or the agency withdrew them when they got sued, because they knew damn well they couldn’t win. So it’s not like we can even go back to those policies, because they aren’t legal.

TLDR: this is just more political theatre.

Lmao this is just objectively false. Republicans passed legislation nearly a year ago, and democrats have just done nothing but refuse to advance it.

I can only assume the legislation being referred to here is H.R. 2 Secure the Border Act introduced in spring of 2023. More political theatre: a way of looking like you’re doing something without actually doing anything.

Let’s look at some of the provisions:

        1. Subject all 11 million undocumented immigrants, including people with legal status under the DACA program, to immediate deportation. Unworkable and dumb.

        2. Send unaccompanied children all alone back to their country of origin. Pretty fucking cold. I wouldn’t sign off on that, would you?

        3. Make it damn near impossible to apply for asylum even if you qualify under US law. People who call themselves conservative: hey why not reverse the laws we had since Reagan?

        4. Make DHS go back to construction on the same border wall they didn’t build back when they had congressional majorities and Donald “build that wall” Trump was president. The wall that doesn’t stop anybody with a couple 2x4s and a handfull of nails. The wall that Mexico was going to “art of the deal” pay for but didn’t pay for. Stupid.

Objectively false my ass. There was nothing serious, practical, or workable about this dumb and blatantly useless non-solution. Get real.

The House passed legislation, then, and the Senate tabled it probably. I highly doubt Senate Republicans would pass the House bill even if democrats wanted to. The moderates in the Senate are the Achilles heel of the right wing half of the Republican party.

Yes. Apparently it wasn’t an automatic deportation before, and 150 democrats think it shouldn’t be.
