imagine a gundam protagonist having blue hair and pronouns and being canonically autistic and punching cops when he gets misgendered. you can’t, it’s impossible. it’d never happen

It’s the first episode of Zeta Gundam (which is the second part of the main Gundam series: Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack) - the new main character, Kamille, gets misgendered and ends up involved in a paramilitary organization lol.

The older Gundam shows do have some misogyny issues, but they’re great shows if you can get past that. They even have some cool female characters, they just don’t get treated very well by the show.

zeta gundam is definitely the worst when it comes to misogyny*, but victory is a close second. zz is pretty good (letting 2.5 girls on the main pilot roster) and turn a is a perfect show and it’s handling of gender is no exception

*and my least favorite tomino show largely because of it (though i haven’t seen g-reco)

What are your thoughts on Wing and G? Those are the only ones I know much about because they were on Toonami. And i was curious how and expert feels, lol.

(I also know the overall plot and charachters of the UC stuff, since i played the hell out of Dynasty Warrions Gundam 2 lol)

i haven’t seen them yet! or i haven’t finished them at least. i’m watching gundam in release order except for when someone wants to watch something out of order with me (which happened for turn a, ibo, and the origin). so i’m currently watching g gundam and watched a few episodes of wing a while back

g gundam is fun so far but not really interesting. i watch an episode, i am somewhere between slightly and extremely uncomfortable with its portrayal of a given nationality, there’s a fight that’s decently enjoyable but not super interesting. i’m still early on so i have hope it’ll get more interesting but so far it’s gonna be one of my least favorites just because it’s not great at the stuff i like gundam for and it’s got enough problems (animation isn’t spectacular, racism sometimes, characters don’t have that much going on so far) that make it hard for me to really enjoy the spectacle of it all. but like, it’s totally fine you know? i’m not really likely to quit it anytime soon, i’m just not particularly invested in seeing what comes next

wing is peak melodrama from what i remember, which rules. i’m a big fan of all that stuff. but my memories of the first couple episodes are fuzzy and all my later knowledge comes from linkin park amvs so i can’t get much more specific than that

what are your thoughts on them?

Gundam has always had a very strong anti-war and anti-nuke themes running through it. Manbabies are mad because the hero of the show is now a lesbian, even Sunrise tried to backpedal and make her not gay.

in the 1985 anime zeta gundam, a shitty fascist cop (named jerid, pictured above) says to blue haired boy (who is very insistent his pronouns are he/him) kamille “kamille? isn’t that a girls name?” to which kamille punches him in the face and yells “kamille’s a man’s name! and i’m a man!” in a manner not usually seen in cisgender people. he also gets called a lesbian whenever he hangs out with his girlfriend by school bullies, because tomino has a weird habit of writing characters who could not possibly be reasonably interpreted as cis. anyway, after punching a cop he gets arrested and ends up getting out and stealing a gundam and joining an antifascist terrorist group led by quattro vagina

the autistic part is also in the show, he literally says “i’m an autistic child” at one point

old gundam rules. start with 0079 if you’re interested, zeta won’t make much sense without it. be warned there’s a lot of pretty gross gender essentialism and misogyny in zeta and victory especially, but they’re all good if you can get past that. turn a is the best one and doesn’t have any real gross stuff in it, and also has a transgender main character

considering how extremely specific this description of zeta gundam’s episode one is, i’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s very obviously a joke
