  • edit ok I was wrong here, I understand what people disagreeing with me are saying

The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.

I am not attacking you, I understand the knee jerk reaction, I am just pointing this out because I think it is true. I also don’t question that you are genuine in your concern, that isn’t what I mean.

To everyone else on this thread, especially if you are white/European or from the US and are white please don’t joke about the President of Mexico getting assassinated given the history with Mexico and the US (and by extension Europe). It isn’t funny, even when you are being sarcastic.

    Just be happy for Mexico.

  • I don’t think you understand, this moment, this slaughter of Palestinians, it is the announcement of a new world order for the western world. A new era of western governments turning inwards and enacting massive amounts of violence towards their own people.

There is only one correct response to that, and it is to treat it as a red line. Failing to do so is catastrophic. Letting Biden win without having to deal with this is incredibly dangerous and is a classic liberal/centrist perspective of appeasing the forces of fascism until it is too late.

  • Nowhere did I say I like Trump, Trump is a fascist, that isn’t hyperbole or shrill lefty talk, bit is just just brand at this point.

Biden needs to stop the Palestinian genocide so that Trump doesn’t win.

I don’t feel like this makes me a troll, maybe you disagree with me. Fine. My intentions are not disingenuous however, I want the least amount of harm to come to all humans and animals however best that may be. In my opinion, that means putting all our chips on the table now and making it clear that no matter what Trump does, Biden has no path to the presidency if he directly backs an ongoing genocide with US weapons against the majority will of the US public (by a sizable margin).

  • Ukraine is a war, it is modern imperialism, an army invades a country and an another army fights to repel the invasion.

    Gaza is a genocide.

Apples and oranges though both are horrendous.

If you think the Palestinian Genocide in Gaza is a war you need to unplug your brain from cable news because it is decaying your capacity to understand reality, slap yourself in the face, touch some grass, topple your world view to pieces and begin over again from the standpoint that human life, all human life, is precious and that the many are never responsible for the actions of the one.

  • I am a very vocal critic of Biden for supporting the Palestinian genocide.

I have railed on him in thread after thread for enabling the slaughter of Palestinians.

I am one single person but I want to vote for Biden, this genocide is just a red line for me.

I can really only speak for the left but mark my words if Biden genuinely stops this genocide (or starts taking meaningful action to stop it) the vast majority of those voters will come back because this isn’t about rejecting Biden (have y’all even been paying attention to leftists organizing around voting “uncommitted” in the primaries as a thoughtful way to mitigate splitting the party?), this is about rejecting neoliberalism’s stranglehold over the democratic party and the absolutely horrific consequences that happen when we don’t do the work to reject the intellectually suffocating and ideologically lazy environment created by neoliberalism and centrism (that inevitably plays directly into the hands of fascists as history has shown over and over again).

Barely anybody on the left who has indicated they don’t want to vote for Biden because of his appalling lack of desire to stop the genocide of the Palestinians is going to react to Biden genuinely creating a ceasefire by not changing their position and supporting Biden over Trump. Leftists understand just as well as centrists that Trump will be worse.

What centrists can’t wrap their mind around is that if we don’t fight existentially for Palestinians now than Gaza will be considered a successful prototype by rightwing fascist western parties/governments all over the world and we will see this kind of violence become the new world order. We need to stamp this shit out now, and many of us on the left feel that the only effective leverage point is setting Biden’s ego for desiring to win the presidency as an old piece of shit against his loyalty to Israel (along with most of the Republican and Democratic parties).

Is Biden directly complicit in the mass murder of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians no matter if he stops the genocide today? Of course, and he will always deserve the jeering insult “Genocide Joe” for it as a tiny penance to pay. However like the rest of y’all I understand that all US presidents are mass murderers. George Bush directly caused 1 million Iraqi citizens to die…. for what? How fucked up is it the way Obama escalated highly illegal unilateral drone strikes completely hidden from the scrutiny of the US public?

I don’t need Biden to be a good person I agree with to vote for him, I need him to come back over what is a very very very reasonable red line.

  • When I first heard about Wingspan app I dismissed it in an instant - why do I want to sit in front of the screen instead of being at the table? As someone working in IT boardgames are my escape from virtual world

I agree and I think that dynamic is definitely at play but it is eclipsed by the immediately evident truth that the digital game is as much a genuine love letter to birds wearing the disguise of an awesome strategy game as the board game itself.

A love letter is a love letter, the details of what medium the letter is written in doesn’t matter, and what better crush to write a love letter to than the birds bursting wild and free into even the most terraformed artificial human environments.

…Do you think you could teach a crow to play wingspan?

  • gyroscope input to supplement joystick controls, see my comment here

    local copy of ^ comment

BAR is already so brilliantly designed with every single damn command in the game being able to be shift clicked to make it into a series of tasks for a unit or factory… that you don’t honestly need to do much. It is basically just:

What button do you want shift (as well as ctrl and alt and to a lesser extent spacebar) to be bound too? This should be comfortable and easy to press as shift clicking is at the core of BAR and TA. The back buttons L5 L4 R4 R5 are good for these controls

What button do you want gyroscope to be toggled on and off by? You don’t have to use gyro but I really recommend giving it a thorough go, if you hold your device comfortably than it will be still and thus you can just focus on the joysticks or trackpad and let your subconscious brain begin integrating gyro. Personally I always leave gyro on when playing and just use the toggle to turn it off for navigating menus

What buttons do you want zoom in and zoom out to be bound too? I recommend to bind zoom in and zoom out to the bumpers on the deck, the normal WASD and mouse template for the Steam Deck comes with this binding as the default if I remember correctly. Using a radically new control scheme can feel claustrophobic or constricting, having intuitive buttons for zooming in and out is critical to combating that in my experience Common All You Need For A Minimal Setup Ctrl, Shift, Alt and SpaceBar commands, Screenshots and Manual Links included!

Now, you can go so much farther than that obviously. For example I found a great BAR control scheme that looked like someone put a lot of care and time into it called “BAR perfecto” but it didn’t fit my conception of how I wanted things so I just started from the factory default WASD and Mouse template.

I hesitate to build up this crazy complicated control scheme and then recommend it though, because most potential fans I can poke and prod enough to try BAR on the deck probably feel the same as you. So honestly at this point I would rather point out that just starting with the default WASD and Mouse control template and making those three choices/keybindings will get you to a point where you can genuinely play BAR and feel like the control scheme can actually work and feel good after a bit of adjustment time. From there you can add as much complexity and power as you want.

If you get frustrated or overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remember people have been figuring out how to make RTS games work well with a mouse and keyboard for decades, if it doesn’t click immediately that isn’t because mouse and keyboard is just better end of story.

    touchpad + gyro works too!

I play against the Barbarian hard AI and can hold my own fine, I dont expect to crush Total Annihilation vets using $2000 gaming computer setups with mouse and keyboard, big monitors and absurd framerates tho… but so what?

I am enjoying playing BAR co-op online with my bro while I lounge on the couch.

The BARbarian AI is genuinely dynamic and fun to play against, it is extremely impressive especially for a community developed game!

I feel like I could hold my own in a casual game of BAR against humans but even if I couldnt I could care less, I can play BAR wherever I want on the deck and it is a blast!

  • Their true goal is to erase Palestine period. If you step back and try to take emotion out of your consideration, Israel’s actions don’t support that statement. Israel has enough military power to have completely erased Gaza months ago, without sending in a single ground troop, and there would have been absolutely nothing Hamas could do about it.

“An estimated 45,000 bombs were dropped during the first 89 days of conflict (Source: Gaza Media Office). It is 505 bombings a day, 21 bombings per hour.

Gaza is razed and emptied of its inhabitants by 5 months of relentless bombing. 85% of Gaza’s population – 1.7 million people – have been forced to flee bombing and shelling.

1.5 million have taken shelter in Rafah, South Gaza, that has normally a population of 250,000 inhabitants. “

    https://www.hi.org/en/news/bombings-in-populated-areas--a-new-extreme-reached-in-gaza

^for a nice update, Israel is now murdering everyone in Rafa too.

It is crystal clear you don’t know what you are talking about, Israel has dropped a nearly unprecedented amount of bombs on a tiny area and for no other reason than to erase Palestinians from the landscape of their homes.

It takes a long time to murder an entire city, especially when the world is watching. Israel is doing it as absolutely fast as it can however.

At least 20 out of 22 hospitals identified by CNN in northern Gaza were damaged or destroyed in the first two months of Israel’s war against Hamas, from October 7 to December 7, according to a review of 45 satellite images and around 400 videos from the ground, as well as interviews with doctors, eyewitnesses and humanitarian organizations. Fourteen were directly hit, based on the evidence collected and verified by CNN and analyzed by experts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on December 21 that no hospitals were functioning in northern Gaza and injured patients who were unable to be moved were “waiting to die.” According to the WHO, as of January 10, six hospitals in the north were partially functioning.

The International Eye Hospital, in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City, was damaged in early October. It was no longer standing by October 12, according to satellite imagery.

Balsam Hospital, in the west of Beit Hanoun, was reduced to rubble by November 3. Craters consistent with 2,000-pound bombs were visible near both medical facilities.

    ……

If you step back and try to take emotion out of your consideration

No I will not take my emotion out of my consideration, the difference between you and me is that my emotions are a warning light indicator for when my ideologies and beliefs are wrong and I have strayed too far off the course of love and empathy for others. My emotions connect me with the immense amount of suffering happening in the Palestinian genocide, even if it is just a little bit that connection categorically denies adopting a heinous lack of empathy or care for the Palestinians people as you have.

My emotions are what makes me a wholistic and intellectually consistent person and to be honest it kind of alarms me when people like you seem to have everything backwards like this and treat their emotions as superfluous entities to be discarded in favor of “cold hard rational analysis”.

  • Why the fuck are you assuming destroying Gaza and committing genocide against the Palestines is a requirement for any plan of action?

Your viewpoint expresses perfectly how insufficient and dangerous blind centrism is.

I have brought up the very real and needless slaughter of probably 50,000+ (if not double that when including all the murder from unnecessary starvation) innocent women, children and men and all you want to talk about are some scaryyy tunnels. Israel has some of the most advanced tanks in the world, some of the most advanced jets in the world, and in general has a functioning modern combined arms military…. and you are a worried about…

    …some tunnels?

You are a clown, I keep saying this but looking back history will have no other name for fools like you who have a comic degree of callousness for the lives of Palestinians and refuse to see the mass scale genocide of Palestinians right in front of their eyes because it doesn’t fit their narrative of how the world works.

You would have been better served remaining entirely ignorant on this topic and simply extending your empathy to Palestinians from purely a standpoint of the fact that they are human beings and deserve care and empathy.

Instead you learned a bunch of smart concepts and “facts” and loaded them up into your head not realizing they were clearly brain worms that would totally destroy even your basic capacity to feel empathy for other humans.

    Shame on you.

  • You don’t think you’ve blown this out of proportion a tad? Maybe slightly overly emotional about it?

Unfortunately I haven’t and I feel my complicity growing everyday the machinery of the empire I am within directly enables dropping 2000 pound bombs on innocent, starving people with no access to electricity.

The most sophisticated fighter aircraft in the world built to out maneuver and defeat sophisticated near peer Russian or Chinese air defense networks are being used as glorified dolly carts to wheel out and dump block clearing 2000 US made bombs…

…onto a city and refugee camp. They are being used to bomb hospitals one by one.

A significant number of attacks on healthcare facilities occurred during the Israel-Hamas war. During the first week of the war, there were 94 attacks on health care facilities in Israel and Gaza, killing 29 health care workers and injuring 24.[1] The attacks on healthcare facilities contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.[2] By 30 November, the World Health Organization documented 427 attacks on healthcare in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, resulting in 566 fatalities and 758 injuries.[3] By February 2024, it was reported that “every hospital in Gaza is either damaged, destroyed, or out of service due to lack of fuel.”[4] By April, WHO had verified 906 attacks on healthcare in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon.[5]

    Go home you hateful clown.
