  • So, which are worth paying for? Netflix hasn’t done a good show for me in 2 or 3 years. Prime Videos Interface, search and selection sucks, Paramount has basically only Star Trek for me. Disney plus comes pretty close for me. I love Star Wars and Marvel, and with a child in the house, they have something for everyone. But i’d argue Disney is a morally worse company than google or reddit.

  • Only AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support. Mostly because wine apps and games tend to open a floating systray if it isn’t there. Other than that, i’m down to no other extensions. I found that most other stuff i changed/added either sounded nice or looked nice in screenshots but did nothing for me in day to day use. Don’t get me wrong. Blur my Shell, Burn my Windows or Dash to Dock all look great. I just found that, after the initial wow factor, they don’t do much for me. The effect wears of quickly and then i don’t notice wether they are there or not.

  • With things like Blizzard it’s “easy”. I don’t NEED Diablo 4. I’d like it, but i’m not going to get it out of principle. But Reddit is different. I don’t need it as a social media platform or to post myself, but for me, a huge portion of relevant online search results are from reddit. I pretty much run into tech and non-tech issues on a daily basis that are only documented or solved by a years old reddit post. And i’m pretty sad to see that go. Not the social part of reddit, but having so much condensed knowledge in a single place.

And while lemmy is nice it isn’t an alternative until i can move instances and subscribe to communities without having a pending status for weeks. You also can’t search online for lemmy because of motörhead and because every instance names itself.

  • Depends on Load. Realistically, one of the used “Mini PC’s” from Lenovo or HP with an i5 and integrated graphics should be decent for a couple of concurrent streams. They are pretty cheap on ebay. You could even get 3 or 4 and cluster them in some form. But most SBCs won’t work too well since transcoding needs a decent GPU of some sort.

  • That’s why i chose the opportunity now, early in, to “move” to an instance in Germany. I still have to rely on the instance owner, but at least juristidiction is that same as where i live and GDPR/DSGVO is something i can somewhat count on. But in the end, it also is the question where the server is. Is the instance hosted on a QNAP NAS in someones basement or on an AWS instance in the US. That’s my biggest gripe when everyone in the privacy community recommends federated stuff. The notion that some dude in Iowa or such is more trustworthy than some corporation is pretty questionable if you ask me.

  • I think having your account tied to an instance without an option to move is a huge issue. Now I’m still dependent on the instance owners rules and willingness/ability to keep it up. Just like reddit oranzy other centralized network. Accounts need to be movable including history and linkage to posts. Same goes for communities. We are just hyper fragmenting now. Communities need to.be able to span instances tobincrease performance and uptime as well as resiliency.

Jerboa works fine for me. The overall experience and peoeple are nice enough. We just have technicalities to iron out.

  • It’s pretty easy. He’s been lucky with the work he did (stole/claimed) once or twice in the past and ever since everyone is eating the BS he says. Twitter is only one thing. Hyperloop, SpaceX etc. are all Ideas a 9 year old would come up with and are so out of reality it isn’t even funny anymore. Or remeber when he was reinventing the Metro, but worse?

He has be so rich so early in his life, that he never had to grow up. He then surrounded himself by yes-sayers and was lucky with how Tesla turned out (in that it got evaluated like a tech company, rather than a car company). Ever since he can’t fathom the idea that someone might know something he doesn’t. He also can’t grasp the idea that money can’t solve certain problems. His twitter posts show how little self control he has and most of it reads like things my 5 year old nephew would say. It’s insanity.
