I’d argue if you just did #3 while changing nothing about the way we run our society, we would just need to repeat step 3 later down the line as new oligarchs and monopolies form and exploit us.

It is also important to mention that most plastic recycling still ends up in landfills. Plastic recycling was sold as myth by big oil and plastics companies to make consumers think the waste problems magically disappeared.
Fix the transit first. It is far more environmentally friendly and it is more accessible to more people.
Remove oil subsidies and use the money to fight the fires
How do you stop consumers from wasting food from the production side?
You’ve linked a US based site which my source implies tends to bias towards ranking Canada higher.
We gotta start somewhere. Remember that food security is a big part of the issue as well. We can’t just stop spraying the toxic stuff without an alternative because global food systems could collapse. I don’t like that we were using the toxic stuff in the first place but it has become a cornerstone of our food production.
I highly doubt the average canadian standard of living is higher than the average in countries like Switzerland, the scandinavian countries and some other well developed countries. They all have better social services, better access to public transit. Finland almost comepletely solved homelessness. We might still be in the top 10, but I doubt the top 3.
Edit: it can be difficult to gauge exactly how to measure QOL. This website tries to break down a few different metrics. Canada has a high QOL when reading US based news, otherwise well developed European countries dominate the list.
Nobody profits (maybe shoemakers) when you walk across a bridge. Oil companies, car companies, tire companies, insurance companies, mechanics, they all profit a little if you drive across the bridge.
This BRT route is proof that any city is not “too car centric” for transit. Once you effectively prioitize the transit and smooth out the boarding process (rasied landings, left lane priority) the transit becomes very competitive. I’m excited to see how well this BRT performs when more density is built.
Which is why we need better regulations for things like the environment. We can’t expect every consumer to make the best decisions, even if they want to they may be confined by money or other issues.
Things like disposable vapes are a good example of something awful for the environment but irresistible to many consumers. They have small batteries, are filled with chemicals, and coated with plastic. They need more regulations to prevent their litter from causing problems. We cannot rely on the consumers to make these choices as a vape pen is an addiction to many consumers.
Canada exported 123 billion worth of oil in 2022. We only care about the carbon if it’s on our soil, seems to be no problem selling the oil to be burned elsewhere.
I have a buddy who prefers these over the chewy dipped versions and I can confirm he is a pyschopath
I’m more so trying to state that sex ed is a broad spectrum and without specification of the exact teachings people will assume different things. Theres a big difference in teaching kids about puberty and teaching kids about how and when to use protection or the process of child birth. Specifying when kids will be taught what could clear a lot of debate about when sex ed is acceptable
This sounds reasonable but really the lesson is more about the stages of puberty than sex ed. Puberty is part of sexual health and development but it isn’t what everyone thinks of when hearing the term sex ed, a lot of people tend to think of sexual intercourse, protection/sexual health, and gender identity when thinking of sex ed.
I think you can still teach children what is not okay without going fully into sexual education. Rules like don’t let a stranger touch you, my private square and ensuring children can reach out to an adult for any reason at any time.
This doesn’t need to fully cover the concepts of sexual intercourse or even the differences in sex/gender. Lessons like no one is allowed to touch chests or groins on anyone and no one is allowed to touch you anywhere without permission, can help set boundries without covering more sexually mature topics.
Remove fossil fuel subsidies and use that money to pay for training/employment of firefighters and forestry management. We should be fining fossil fuel companies and big polluters but just removing the subsidies is a start and will free up funds to solve problems they helped create.
It is not hurting me but as a young canadian facing insane inflation and record home prices, i could benefit from a free hike in the woods too.
But it is really fair that other canadians should be expected to pay?
Most of North America has been built to prioritize the big ass SUV making the alternatives more difficult (farther distances) and often dangerous (bicycles gutters)
