Why is this move of Max more severe than Alonso and Sainz crashing into other cars at turn 1? Were there even penalties for them?

Edit: am I totally fine with this penalty… But why didn’t the others get one?

not more severe, he just gained an advantage from it whereas Alonso and Sainz both fell to the back. I’m guessing if he gave the place back none of this would have happened.

Penalties are not dished out by the severity of the outcome though. They are given for the severity of the offense committed.

They aren’t not applied by severity of outcome in the sense that you don’t get a harsher penalty if you take out the race leader vs a backmarker, but it does absolutely make a difference if you gained an advantage from the situation.

Didn’t look like there was max could do there, he was clearly trying to turn and just couldn’t make it due to poor traction on shit track. He should’ve given the place back though

I don’t believe it! They normally let him get off Scot free. This penalty will have zero impact on him though because he’s already won and a 5 second penalty when you have the fastest car on the track is a joke
