Voyager is fantastic. I started with Memmy and settled on Voyager for a while. But I’m trying Avelon right now and it’s smoooooth. The swipe back function works much better on Avelon, and their “Explore” tab is great.

Avelon is phenomenal. Especially the hide bars on scroll feature. No other app has this. I wonder if it’s hard to develop? I remember the developer of Apollo had quite a few bugs with it in the beginning.

Adding my thanks for the suggestion too - avelon looks great! I started with Memmy and I moved on to Voyager and Lemmios. Both are great but both have problems. Loving avelon so far!!

At least on iOS, I prefer Avelon the best as it’s the most iOS native feeling app. A close second for me on iOS is Mlem. Both I still use from their betas, but both are now in the App Store as well, go give them a try if anyone hasn’t already!

maybe its a settings thing but for me voyager keeps showing me posts i’ve already seen even they should be marked as read, while avelon keeps showing me new stuff. otherwise they are both wonderful.

You could argue that 25% for sync is quite something, and almost double that of the next largest competitor.

I am using it, it’s okay, not as good as Reddit Is Fun was.

but I have to say I am not as evangelical about pushing open source and lack of telemetry, so I don’t care about unintrusive ads as a free-tier, nor do I care a lot about collecting usage data to improve the app

Good alternatives are always needed, though! I love Sync, but then I am also not sure it would be as good as it is today if it wasn’t compelled to stay competitive with RIF, Baconreader, Apollo (to a lesser extent) and the dozen other Reddit apps that used to be out there (F in the chat).

I wish the Apollo dev would’ve ported his app and migrated his user base. IMHO, Syncs popularity shows that the developer was able to migrate a lot of their old user base to Lemmy.

I’m waiting for Boost since the reddit exodus. I’ve condemned myself to mobile browsing particularly to be loyal to boost and also the enjoy how much better 3rd party clients are when it’s finally live.

As a sync user of a few years, it’s important that we don’t bring down other apps while raising our own up. It’s a good thing there’s healthy competition! Sync is great, but that doesn’t mean that other apps aren’t.

It doesn’t cost money, you could just pay to remove ads. Unless you want all the super fancy features with premium. I bought sync for reddit years ago but I’m sticking with the regular non-premium with Lemmy.

Sync isn’t polished for lemmy yet, so yeah, there are a few rough edges. Having said that, usually a bad experience is because you didn’t customize it to your liking. There is likely a setting for any UI gripe you may have had. There is even a search feature for setting because it’s so customizable.

I think a lot of the love for it is that sync was arguably the best android Reddit app for a long time. People like myself have become very comfortable with sync on Reddit, and sync for Lemmy is basically the same thing we are all so comfortable with.

I looked at some of the other alternatives and they just didn’t feel as good to me, but I have also been using sync almost daily for years.

This is why Sync mentions get downvoted a lot. Other options have most or all of its features, but none bring ads to Lemmy.

I’d argue that most of the userbase would rather not normalize ads on Lemmy.

While I agree, I think sync takes the award for most non intrusive ads in an app. I don’t think I’ve seen a free ad supported app with less intrusive ads.

I’ve heard that argument before too – but again, no other Lemmy app uses ads. Having them is pretty damn intrusive when the alternative is simply not having them.

Of course, it’s the dev’s prerogative to sell a closed-source product, and their choice to be paid for it. I support that. But the issue gets deeper since Lemmy is ultimately FOSS. Lemmy needs donations to survive. I’d wager that most folks who paid to remove ads from Sync aren’t paying their instance for their bandwidth, so it ends up being an unnecessary stumbling block for the platform.

I’m all for paying devs for their work, but I am still finding the pricing for the lemmy version of sync just too high. The ad free purchase is 4 times more than it was for the reddit app. And I get that there are probably less users so he needs to make up the difference, but there’s also way less content on lemmy than there was on Reddit, impacting the value there in my opinion.

I find the amount of features and having different settings per account overwhelming, that’s just my opinion though. I’m sure the dev put a ton of hard work into it.

In my F-Droid, there’s plenty of other! Eternity, Liftoff, Jerboa, Thunder, Voyager, Lemmur and Combustible when I search for “Lemmy”. Maybe you don’t have all/the same repositories enabled? I’m using Liftoff at the moment, which is great so far, but I haven’t settled yet. I want to try using some of the other ones before I’m sure. For reddit I used Joey, and I would consider switching to Joey for Lemmy if it existed.
