Seriously, they suck. Do people outside the west even use them? I think the user interface sucks even. I wouldn’t hate them as much if their users weren’t basically cultists.

I used an iPhone for 10 years. I never liked it. I had a Mac for 5 years. I never liked it.

Ok I did not expect this to generate so many responses. I’m muting this now.

But before I go I want to let y’all know that I was the one who convinced Steve Jobs to eat carrots instead of getting chemo

    • it’s duplo. some people need the gutter bumpers and parts too big to be a choking hazard.

“I don’t need to do any of that fancy stuff… I just need it to check my emails and surf the webs.”

then ask why they paid $2500 for something to do what a $300 device can do, and wait for the angry choking sounds while they explain how the marked up busy box with training wheels is for the superior consumer.

The only reason I can fathom why most non-tech people like Apple is because 1) MS sucks worse in many ways 2) they have internalized the marketing hype, aesthetics and logic of $$$ means better

I’ve been forced to use an iphone and mac for work about 6 months ago, and the mac is mostly just annoying at times, while the iphone is really much more annoying generally. Both of them make doing a lot of common daily things like connect bluetooth device take 2x as many clicks/taps than they need to be.

I think it’s worth pointing out that the Apple ecosystem is really good, too. iMessage may be annoyingly closed down, but it is so nice to be able to text people with my keyboard

Huh? I basically never use my phone to access Whatsapp, although it doesn’t have an official Linux client the web interface is good enough.

This may be a US/anti Facebook thing, but I don’t use WhatsApp. Also, I religiously shut down notifications from my browser because so many sites work their way in there

I am kinda stuck with Apple because I am the type of person to obsessively take notes and there is no more seamless experience than the notes app, as feature light as it is

Ya, if I was using airpods the UX would probably be much smoother. You have to go all-in Apple to get the ideal experience.

Overpriced. Status symbols. Not even better for security, that’s just a marketing thing and some nerds got caught up in it. The code is closed you literally can’t tell how secure it really is and they can create whatever backdoors they want.

Android also has issues but you can at least load aftermarket ROMs to take more control over the device and security yourself.

There was a window of time where it was super easy to jailbreak iPhones - and there were tons of cool customization options, plus you could easily pirate apps and get in-app purchases for free. That was neat. That was the only period in which I owned an iPhone and felt okay with it. I’ve heard jailbreaking is a lot more difficult these days but I don’t really know because I switched to Android.

I am also on the Apple hate train mostly because I used to repair iphones for a living. I think Apple was pretty cool in the 90s with their iMac line and with the iPod but I think the release of the iPhone is the turning point for Apple. I never owned an iPhone and I think the original reason was because I saw most iPhone users as pretentious. To be honest though. IPhone work and a lot of people like them so I don’t really care what phone anyone uses because it isn’t important and nobody cares.

Mac OS are unironically so much better than windows. My Macbook with 8 GB RAM and a 4 year old processor runs better than my work laptop with 16gb ram and a 2 year old processor running Windows.

I have a Kali VM on both machines and the Macbook runs it smoother when I dedicate 2gb to the VM than the windows version with 6gb dedicated to the VM.

I just wish I could run Fedora or something on my work laptop.

This machines are optimised to fuck

Out of the box they come set up with the worst settings imaginable, click to select instead of touch and low sensitivity, but once you get past that and start using spotlight (command + space bar) there is no going back

Battery life and quality generally is also awesome, and mag safe is awesome, except for when they took it away for some reason

After using a 10+ year old Macbook someone dumped on my lap as e-waste, I’m a believer in Macbooks now as far as ergonomics is concerned. None of the non-Macbook laptops I’ve owned or serviced comes close to how it activates the “it just feels right” part of my brain. Not a single one. Only real con is it doesn’t have an Ethernet port.

As for the OS, MacOS better than Windows but worse to Linux. I gave MacOS a chance before dual-booting Fedora, and yeah, the Macbook with Fedora is definitely better. Not exactly a fair comparison since MacOS Catalina is no longer supported, but Catalina is like the Windows 7 of MacOS in terms of how Apple fanboys look to it with nostalgia apparently.

The moral of the story is to make friends with Apple fanboys so they will offload their old but perfectly functional Macbooks on your lap lol

I often find iOS UI/UX choices confusing and sometimes contradictory, eg what I need to know to swipe left/right or long press versus what it just doesn’t support. Just the amount of stuff hidden away from the end user, like saving files and having a file system, put me off it early on and I think it’s still mostly like that.
