NBC News writing pure propaganda for Norwegian in this article. Norwegian callously abandoned a sick elderly passenger, and didn’t inform her family she was in a coma on an African island? Thank goodness Norwegian also abandoned those other eight people so she could get some real help.

NBC News and Norwegian should be ashamed.

Okay, since it seems so people can do when confronted with propaganda is read it and agree with it, I present to you AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW. I know Norwegian is a huge company and as such you are inclined to trust their good will but,

This is a little less dickish than it sounds. They were late returning from a private event, and so the ship left their passports with the port agent. If the ship misses the tide it’s a 12 hour delay for everyone and probably means missing another port of call. No assholes here

There is a reason you only go on excursions provided by the cruise ship company. You pay more but they won’t leave you behind, if you take a private tour you run the risk of not getting back on time and being left behind.

It doesn’t say anything about a coma? It says

She had “medically disembarked” from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

There is no information on her medical condition. If an adult wishes to disembark from the cruise, what do you expect them to do? They can’t legally prevent her from doing so.

And the other people scheduled a private tour unaffiliated with the cruise when they knew they had to be back on the ship by 3pm. They probably figured that the ship would wait for them and inconvenience everybody else if necessary. They got what was coming to them.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,” a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
