And by that it probably failed as they were aiming for retaking Crimea or at least split it in half. Also a lot of ground taken during counteroffensive is now lost again due to Russian offensive. Sadly so.
The counteroffensive didn’t fail. Ukraine made significant gains and Russia’s military capacity crumbled at this point.
