21 February 2024 - Liam Dawe Writes:

System76 makers of Pop!_OS, various laptops and the stylish Thelio desktop line have announced a big refresh for their line of laptops. Featuring newer 14th Gen Intel CPUs, this is coming as part of their new “Ambition Unfolds” campaign.

They recently refreshed the Bonobo WS and Serval WS models, which are their most powerful and expensive offerings and they will soon be giving the same treatment to their cheaper Oryx Pro and Adder WS models too with the newer 14th Gen Intel i9 14900HX.

“Providing customers with a fast, hassle-free, and long-lasting computer minimizes obstacles for these users while accelerating progress.” says Sam Mondlick, VP Sales of System76. “For this reason, System76 dedicates themselves to empowering users to elevate their work on well-engineered systems.”

The main changes they noted are:

  • Adder WS - 14th Gen update, 15” only, new chassis design and up to 12 TB storage option - coming March 5th.
  • Oryx Pro - 14th Gen update, upgrade from H-class to HX-class CPU (now 24 cores vs 14 cores) - coming “soon”.
  • Bonobo WS - 14th Gen update, now with options to choose between a 2K (240Hz) or 4K (144Hz) 17” display - available now.
  • Serval WS - 14th Gen update, new 17” 2K (240Hz) display option - available now.

I’ve been out of the scene for years and hoping to jump back in soon. But I noticed a detail about these…

    All Nvidia.

How much of a problem is that these days? I know Wayland still has issues, but is it usable as one’s main laptop despite that? Or do most people just stick with Xorg?

And for that matter how come S76 isn’t promoting AMD graphics anyway?

Because of System76, Nvidia isn’t the problem it used to be. System76 has always been pragmatic in their decisions, which included recognizing their relatively small influence on suppliers when they were establishing their business. They aren’t huge now but they have gained market share and influence and developed good supplier relationships to make their hardware work well with their OS (and therefore Linux in general).

People have been asking for System76 to offer Laptops with AMD for years, but they must not think they can successfully do so without some tradeoffs they don’t think would be worth taking.

There is the Pangolin that is all AMD but it is an iGPU so not the same performance as a dGPU.
