    Oh man I miss when it was common for most popular games to get these kinds of total conversion mods. I feel like you don’t see those so much these days

      There’s still a lot of projects out there. In the world of Fallout for example there was Fallout: The Frontier for Fallout New Vegas and Fallout London for Fallout 4 is apparently getting released relatively soon.

      There’s also a lot of mods out there for source ports like Ashes 2063 for Doom II.

      Unless you follow the base game (ex. Fallout New Vegas or Doom II) or mod websites like Nexus Mods (lots of game pages have a category for total conversion mods) and ModDB (a good chunk of the mods that win their yearly awards are total conversion mods) they can be difficult to come across.

      There might also be some skepticism because a lot of total conversion mods sizzle out in development or don’t live up to community expectations (ex. Also Fallout: The Frontier).


      You might be aware of this already and could be stating they just aren’t as common but I just wanted to include some examples and places where they can be found.

        Tbh the ashes one was entirely new on me, cheers! But yeah I was aware of the fallout stuff.

        You’re spot on with the note at the end, I’m aware and glad that a few still seem to happen. But yeah I remember a time about 15 years ago when any remotely popular PC game would have a decent selection of total conversion mods, I spent hundreds of hours playing C&C, Civ, HL & diablo total conversions back then and it seemed like some new ones would show up for those games every month (obviously there was a lot of crap).

        Seems more exceptional to see them released these days, especially as you mention, many fizzle out before the first release

      I wish all these people working for free for proprietary games would invest their labor in making content for a Free Software game engine instead.

        I kinda agree, but there’s a massive jump between making a mod for a released game (which often has an SDK or mod tools built on top of it, often you only need to write config files, provide assets and maybe a bit of lua or something) and building a game from scratch on top of an engine.
